albums and sketchbooks differ from notebooks in several ways. they are usually in landscape format. the textblock is made from heavier paper, and the sheets are sewn with additional guards so that the spine is wider than the fore-edge, allowing space for swell when items (photos, cards, labels) are attached to the pages.
for these particular albums, the “live edge” makes use of the outer edges of a hide or skin which have been trimmed and would usually be discarded. by paring these pieces very thin and placing them against textured or decorated papers, the edge becomes a distinctive feature.
